West Dufferin Trails
The trails of Kenna Cartwright Park extend to the west end of the Mount Dufferin Ridge. The official trails start at the main trailheads but takes a 1.5 km hike to get to over to these trails, so a few hikers and many dog-walkers drive down Hillside Drive past the Kamloops Regional Corrections Center to a gate where we can park and then hike into the West Dufferin Trails. These lower trails are unofficial and not in the Park. There is an ALR application posted on the gate so we may lose access to these trails in the future, but for now we can bear left onto the sagebrush and forest flats and hike out to the fence, then we can pick any of the trails we choose to walk/hike that day for a loop route.
Most of the trails on the flats are used by dog walkers, but we enjoy combining the trails with the Sunset Trail, Mesa Trail, and the Ponderosa Trail for a longer and scenic route.
The ridge above (West Dufferin Ridge and sometimes called The Hogsback) has a trail (Sunset) to a viewpoint that looks down the Thompson River Valley.
The shorter loop is flat and is only about 1.75 km. When the snows cover these tracks, there will be days where 1.5 km to 3.0 km will be a good choice. For nice days, take in the Sunset Viewpoint too.
Hiking distances are provided here for hikers to make up their own route on the West Dufferin Trails.
