Mesa on the Snow
The western end of Kenna Cartwright Park has some of our favorite trails. We usually access the trails from Hillisde Drive past the Kamloops Regional Correctional Center at a gate heading north through the grasslands and sagebrush. We follow the pipeline route up over the shoulder, then we pick a loop. On this day there was lots of snow, so we hiked on the Mesa Trail for a 4.1 km loop (lollipop-shaped) route.
The route climbs over the lowest part of the Mount Dufferin Ridge. The skies were clear in the hills with some mist in the lower valley.
Many of the ponderosa pines of the westenr end of the park are now barren snags standing over the hills, victims of pine beetles. .
The Mesa Trail has several views to the west, down and out to Kamloops Lake, this one through a host of laddered-snags.
The Mesa Trail winds through rocky hills and open views are part of the reward to hiking this end of the park.
Kenna Cartwright Park has over 40 km of fine trails for hiking and biking, and the trails on the west side offer open hiking on good trails, packed with outstanding views in every direction.
