Upstream with a Paddle
May 3
Paddling up the South Thompson River into a strong headwind for 40 minutes took only 12 minutes back. Even the ducks and geese took cover on a blustery day.
We paddled the North Thompson for 2 hours. An old boom logging operation on the east shore past Westsyde still has some poles and pilings and two scuttled boats near the shoreline. Too muddy to see much under the water this time. The North Thompson Channel had just enough water to allow us to traverse it from north to south. A beaver and lots of ducks and geese in the mile long corridor. An eagle's nest at the mouth is in the same place as last year. Sometimes it is hard to spot the eddies on the way back upstream but the west shore seemed easier than the east.
