On Ross Moore Lake
Every year I take backroads to Ross Moore Lake. The route was through the upper grasslands on the Long Lake Road. The road becomes a bit rougher as it enters the forest in the Dropping Creek drainage. At a junction with the McConnell FSR, I stayed left and continue through the forest through gullies and over ridges for another 8 km.
Ross Moore Lake is only 3.5 km from the east end of Lac le Jeune, but the possible roads are far too rough so we take the longer route from the southeast which arrives at the Ross Moore Lake Rec Site. There is a good hand launch there for a paddle around the lake.
This is a quiet spot year-round. There was no one else around on this fine fall day. Some wind on the lake created some chop, a regular occurrence by late morning in the Interior.
The Rocky Mountain Rangers cabins on the north shore of the lake were closed up and quiet, unused in a Covid year.
When the lake was dammed (on the southeast corner), some of the bays flooded some of the shoreline trees. One larger bay still has a few standing snags.
On the shoreline was a mated pair of sandhill cranes. They are easily spooked, so I stayed far enough away while trying for a photo with a telephoto lens.
A paddle around the lake is 3 km so I often do two loops, one in each direction. On the way back, I took a left turn to return by the McConnell FSR which is actually a better road. I will be back again next summer.
