Aylmer Lake
Aylmer Lake (sometimes called Star Lake) sits on the high, open ridge above Little Shuswap Lake. Cross the bridge over the South Thompson River at Chase and proceed west. At a well-signed junction, take the Bear-Loakin Road (Niskonlith Lake too) and climb up the switchbacks. The hillside opens up. In spring, this is one of the best areas to hike for an an incredible display of wildflowers – especially chocolate lily, balsam root, shooting stars, lupines, and various grassland flowers on a south-exposure slope.
In winter, the open route is good for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Its an easy ski up to the lake and a fun ski back down.
The south approach (at N50 48.300 W119 44.758) is on Reserve lands, so permission from the Band Office is recommended. The north approach (at N50 49.565 W119 45.376) is on the border of Reserve lands. It is possible to mountain bike these trails. Take the time to go to the south ridge for a view over the valley.
