Winter on Wheeler
Wheeler Mountain is a nice summer hike, following old double tracks to the top of the mountain, but in winter those same tracks are hard work. We broke trail from Wheeler Pond to the top, taking turns on our snowshoes on the 11km return route.
We were pleased to have a sunny day in the upper grasslands on our way to the track up Wheeler.
To cut off some distance, we left the open sunny meadows to climb up the sidehill through the forest.
The route goes up and past Wheeler Pond, then traverses along the north side of Wheeler Mountain before climbing the northwest ridge to the top. The forest thinned out right before the western summit.
We had lunch on a knoll with views to the south and west before turning around to follow our tracks back down the mountain, happy to be on a now-stomped-in-track.
The last leg of this out-and-back route crosses the open grasslands just suuth of Lac du Bois where many snowmobile tracks criss-cross the hills.
We have stomped in the track now so anyone who follows the tracks will have a much easier time of it. For detailed directions on this route, see these links – Wheeler Winter and Exploring Wheeler Mountain.
