There are 3 mountains in a line between the Lac du Bois Road and Tranquille Canyon.   From south to north, they are Mara Mountain, Wheeler Mountain, and Opax Mountain.

Driving Directions/Trailheads:

  • From North Kamloops, drive up Batchelor Drive and carry on into Lac du Bois Protected Area.
  • Wheeler Mountain is mainly accessed from Lac du Bois, but it is possible to start from the Pruden Pass Road.
  • Tranquille/Mara Trail to the Wheeler Mountain Road – 4.7 km one way
  • Pruden Pass Road to the Upper Grasslands Track to the Wheeler Mountain Road – 4 km one way
  • Lac du Bois to the Wheeler Mountain Road  – 1.8 km one way
  • We have also gone around the east side, up the mountain from the southeast side, and up the mountain from the northwest side, all off-trail.

Trails:

  • Wheeler Mountain from Lac du Bois – Follow the double track around the east side of the lake and continue on the Upper Grasslands Track.   At 1.8 km watch for a double track bearing west and up the hill.    Follow this road as it winds past Wheeler Pond and then around the flank of Wheeler Mountain.   The second left uphill leads to the summit area.   The Wheeler Mountain Road winds around the shoulder and drops down to Pruden Pass.
  • Wheeler Mountain from the Tranquille – Criss Creek Road – Go through the gate for the Mara Trail and then turn onto the double track.    Follow it all the way up into Pruden Pass at 4.7 km.   Turn left and continue the climb up the Wheeler Mountain Road.   there are possible routes right and left on the way up that will require good navigation skills.
  • The Wheeler Mountain Road can be linked to Hanging Valley following single tracks and double tracks.
  • There is no open high summit on Wheeler Mountain.    The highest point is in the forest.    The best viewpoints are at the top of any of the west-facing bluffs.
