There are 2 trails to the top of Mara Mountain and several routes that can be taken.

Trailheads/Driving Directions:

  • The trailhead for the Mara Canyon Trail (The Hoodoos Trail, Cinnamon Ridge Trail) can be continued all the way to the top.
  • The longest route comes from the southwest Pruden Pass Road then a double track to the top.
  • Other routes require navigation skills.   Mara Northeast is the shortest and has the least elevation gain.

Trails

  • The Mara Canyon Trail (the Canyon or the Ridge route) can be followed to the top, but the upper part is steep and has loose material.   Near the top the trail enters the gully and meets two other trails to the top/front side of the mountain.   That route is the shortest (5.8 km), but it has the most elevation gain and it is the steepest and most difficult.
  • The trail from the southwest is easy to follow but it is 12 km, a 4 hour hike.
  • Mara Northeast is a fine route, but it takes some navigation ability, especially across the top of the mountain.   It is a 7.5 km return hike.
  • We have also gone up Mara from the east, from the west, and along parallel routes from the ones noted here.   The mountain has opens slopes so there are many possible variations.
