A short hike into the lower Mara Mountain hills
Driving Directions:
- drive west on Tranquille Road (or Ord Road) and continue past the airport, the golf course, some farms, and when you arrive at a fork in the road, bear right
- park at the gate on the right just past the CN trail tracks
Trailhead(s):
- There is a person-gate at the fenceline.
- Hikers can do the 4 – 5 km trail in ether direction (there are some options to make it longer or shorter).
Trail:
- Hikers can do the loop trail in 1.25 hours or they can extend the hike by going up the Tranquille – Pruden Pass Road.
- This is a good trail to do in early spring because the south-facing treeless slopes clear of snow early.
- Ticks are present in early spring and it is possible to spot a rattlesnake in the area. There are prickly pear cacti off trail in these foothills.
- There is a longer route (6.2 km one way) to the top of Mara Mountain using the road to Pruden Pass, then a right turn to follow a track to the top of the mountain.
- The road is also used for off-trail routes in the Tranquille Hills, a hike down to The Guardsmen, or up to Wheeler Bluffs (use the Search Bar to find maps and info on these hikes).
