Some trails near Deep Lake in the northeast corner of Lac du Bois Protected Area.

Driving Directions:

  • From Kamloops North Shore, drive out Westsyde Road.
  • The trailhead is on Ida Lane, but there is only a couple of spaces to park below the new housing development.
  • Many of us park at Westsyde Shopping Center or on weekends at Westsyde Elementary, then we walk up Ida Lane.

Trailhead:

  • The new trailhead starts on the left at the circle below the new housing development.   It bears left and splits.   The left fork climbs the gullies to the Fibre Optic Line.   The right fork goes past the water tower and then joins the old Deep Lake Trail.
  • It is still possible to walk up the road to the Black Arch and enter the park from the decades-old trailhead.
  • The trail continues up the hill toward Deep Lake.

Trails:

  • A pleasing route is to take the single track to the right of the hill and go around the hill to the north end of Deep Lake and back.     This is usually called the Deep Lake Extended Loop.
  • The Grasslands Community Trail comes down the hill to Deep Lake from the Lac du Bois Grasslands.    It is possible to use a two-vehicle system to do a one way hike to McQueen Lake (14 km).   There is one section in the middle that requires some navigation to get to the McQueen Creek gully.
  • We can also turn onto the Fibre Optic line and climb over the hills to the McQueen Creek Road to do a loop route.   This choice requires some navigation.
  • Another choice is to climb up the trail to the height of the ridge then turn uphill onto North Batchelor Ridge but there is no trail to follow on this scenic route.
  • Another choice is to link onto the Westsyde Bench routes following the Fibre Optic double track south.
  • The grasslands tracks become grown-over in summer.

Features:

  • For a shorter hike pick the Deep Lake Trail or the Deep Lake Extended Loop.
  • For a longer hike go up the Grassands Community Hill then veer off to a hilltop for the view.
  • Most of us hike from high to low when we do the Grasslands Community Trail.
  • The Grasslands Community Trail is on separate page on this website and a link will be provided here once it is ready (on volunteer time).
