The Owl Trail
The official name for this trail in Kenna Cartwright Park is the Mesa Trail. For us, it has become the Owl Trail over many years because in most years there is a nest of owls in a hole in snag overlooking the trail. In the map below, the snag is approximately under the words Mesa Trail in the top left corner.
This year we were pleased to see 3 young owls in the tree with the mother owl sitting on a branch nearby watching. This is perfect spot to bring a long lens to get some good shots.
The valley that the Mesa Trail runs through has many dead ponderosa pine trees, some of which have become wildlife snags. The particular tree that houses the owl's nest has been occupied almost every spring by a roost of baby owls. If you hike the Mesa Trail do it while the owls are there. By the summer, they have flown off to higher terrain.
