A short but steep trail up the side of Savona Mountain to east-facing caves.   Pictographs can be seen in the caves.

Driving Directions:

  • Drive west on Highway #1 to Savona.
  • Turn onto the Tunkwa Lake Road.   Continue for 11.5 km south.
  • Turn onto the Savona Mountain Forest Service Road.    There may not be any signage at the corner.
  • Climb the gravel road for 0.5 km.    The trailhead is a double track on the right (at N50° 40.795′ W 120° 46.595′).

Trail:

  • The unsigned double track heads west at a moderate grade for 0.5 km.   A single track then starts to climb the steep slopes.
  • The upper part of the trail is on steep slopes with a loose surface.
  • The trail braids into separate routes near the top, some of which require light scrambling.
  • At the base of the cliffs the caves is a traverse with mild exposure over to the caves.
  • A bit of scrambling is required to enter the caves.
  • The cave ceiling is low,  so care must be taken.
  • Return by the same route, but the downhill track can be quite slippery.   When this route is very dry, it can be unsafe on the downhill sections.
