Rabbit Island
When spring starts to arrive, the hills become icy and muddy so we have to find lower routes that dry up early. Rabbit Island is a 4km beach-island walk best done in March.
Park at the southeast corner of McArthur Island. Walk down to the beach and go upstream a short ways. Hikers will have to wade through shallow water, but we found a spot about 20 feet wide and only calf deep with a gravel bottom. We carry our walking shoes across and change on the other side. We followed the big winter beach to the west end, then stayed up on the bank on the south side to do a full loop of the perimeter of the island. On a warm day, ramblers could even walk in bare feet on the long sandy beach.
Please note that Rabbit Island itself is private property but the beaches and shoreline below the high-water mark are public property.
