Peterson Creek Park – East Rim Loop
With multiple access points and steep trails it is hard to get to know which trails are best to combine for a hike. Rather than do one post on this area, several recommended route options will be listed separately.
This loop can be started from the Sahali area or from the main entrance near 6th Avenue. In this post, directions are given for the lower (main) entrance.
Drive to the parking area. Start the main trail heading toward the waterfall. As you come to the crossroads, take the left fork (Trail 13 – Billy Miner Trail) which switchbacks up the east side. From the plateau on top, proceed south staying close to the edge. Follow a single track through a fence crossing and pick one of several trails that follows the edge of the canyon. Several trails braid out and in most cases, the upper trail is the best choice, especially when it crosses a gully (Trail 14).
You will round a ridge and start a gradual descent to the creek. Cross the creek on rocks and climb the steeper trail up the side slope, linking back in to the west side trails (Trail 12, then 8). Follow this trail as it bears north following the edge of the canyon. Watch for a good trail (Trail 18) that heads down the west sidehill all the way to the bottom, then return to the vehicle the way you came. This is about 1.25 hours of hiking at a steady pace.
A long-time favorite!
