On Greenstone Mountain
Greenstone Mountain Provincial Park is an 124 hectare area at the top of the mountain. We can drive right to the top at 1793m (5884 ft.) where there is lots of parking near the communications towers and buildings. There is also an old fire lookout to the south. A number of trails follow the ridge or descend the slopes from the top. It is also possible to link backroads and ATV/motorcycle trails to create a loop in the area. The mountain top offers wide views in all directions.
The forest service lookout has been restored and maintained by snowmobile and ATV clubs in our area.
From the rocky ridges at the summit, the view to the northwest is toward Dairy Lake with Mount Savona in the distance.
Kwilakwila Lake is below the summit on the west side, bordered by cutblocks.
Grace Lake lies in a forested area on the south side of the lake.
After hiking a loop from the summit, I drove down the Greenstone Mountain Road to the east, then followed the Chuwhels Mountain FSR to a trailhead where I parked, then hiked into Chuwhels Lake, a favorite spot in this area.
On the way down the mountain are numerous viewpoints to the north where wide grasslands overlook the Thompson River Valley.
When the temperatures rise in the valley it is nice to drive to higher altitudes to enjoy cooler temperatures and greener environments. .
