Wolf Lichen
Wolf Lichens are the predominant lichen species in our montane douglas fir forests. They form bright green or green-yellow clumps on branches and on the trunks of trees. They are often found on exposed sites in the forest, but are common at many elevations.
First Nations people used it as dye, but it contains a poison (vulpinic acid),and was used as a poisonous wolf bait, mixed in with fats.
We see it covering trunks and branches in the forest, firs festooned with green “furs.”
