Paddling Heffley Lake
One of the best lakes for paddling in our area is Heffley Lake. The launch spot is at the east end of the lake close to the BC Rec site. A tour of the entire lake, following the shoreline is 13 km, so for most days on the lake we just choose a loop to paddle to match the conditions and time available.
There are homes along the north shore but most of the south shore is forested and quiet.
Embleton Mountain stands above the north side of the lake
There are a number of small bays to explore along the south shore.
When there is no wind and sun shines through greyish clouds, a silver light shines on the lake surface.
I spotted an eagle and on the lake, loons and ducks were active. At this time of year, baby loons can be spotted swimming, not far from parents.
This was an early start on a weekday so the lake was very quiet. It can be a much busier lake in the afternoons, particularly on a weekend, a good time for kayakers to avoid. We have about 100 lakes we paddle in the area and since we get out about 60 times in a year, we only get to some of them each year. Heffley Lake is one we try to paddle every year.
