Mamit Lake
On a sunny fall day, I drove into the High Country to paddle and decided (en route) to paddle Mamit Lake. There was no one else on the lake and it is not a prime fishing area. The lake is shallow and algae fills the lake in summer. There were a few ducks on the lake and some shoreline birds too, particularly on the west side where there are no homes or roads. The noise of the highway was always present, but overall it is an easy launch and a pleasant paddle. The lake had been drawn down so there were large gravel beaches to launch the kayak.
Farming surrounds the lake on 3 sides. At the south end the sun was shining through a fall crop.
There was some fall color provided by red-ossier dogwood along the shoreline. The lake was calm and reflections were welcome when I paddled north, away from the sun’s glare.
Mamit is not one of my favorite lakes to paddle, but when you paddle 60+ days each year, its good to rotate paddling destinations each time out.
