Horseshoe and Black Lake
On a warm summer day, I went into the Roche Lakes area to paddle a lake and hike into a different lake. The turn to the West Roche Lake campsite is the same turn that branches off to the Horseshoe Lake Rec Site. There is a boat launch at the small camping area on the shores of the lake.
In late spring we enjoy paddling around the marshy areas at the west and north side of the lake.
As algae spreads in the shallow lake, there is less activity on and around the lake, but some of the water lilies were in bloom.
After paddling Horseshoe Lake (2.8 km), I drove over the turn to the main campground at Roche Lake, but parked at the turn to Black Lake. I have hiked past Black Lake and on to Bog Lake Ernest Lake, and along rought tracks in a loop soute, but I wanted to see just how rough the road was and whether I could drive to the shores of the lake, so I hiked in the 0.9 km track.
There was no one at Black Lake and I decided that I will be paddling the lake, but I also decided the road was too rough to drive to the lakeshore. On the way out I met a jeep drive and talked to him. I walked out and beat him out, staying ahead of the curses (its a very rough road).
I will return to paddle the lake, carrying an inflatable SUP in a backpack, hiking in and back out. The same plan will be used for John Frank Lake, Ernest Lake, John Frank Lake, Bulman Lake, and Frisken Lake, I have hiked to all of these, but I am not convinced the paddle opportunity is worth the maltreatment of the truck to get into the lakes. Watch for future posts.
