Firesmoke.ca
An excellent resource is the website firesmoke.ca (also available as an app). With this resource, we can visually see where the smoke will be (and how much) hour to hour for the next 36 hours.
What I do is I use the slider (press pause, then go forward one hour at a time) to see where the smoke will be. I plan my paddle, hike, or exploration into an area with little to no smoke. It may mean driving a ways to get away from the smoke, but its worth it.
With the recent wildfire, the prevailing winds are from the southwest and so the fire blows north or northeast towards Kamloops. If we go south of the fire, we will more likely see clearer skies. I paddled two lakes to the south and had clear skies and one hike with good conditions too and more are planned.
