Explore’s 25 Incredible Hiking Trails
Explore Magazine has a free ebook available at this article/link – 25 Incredible Trails in BC. The noteworthy trails in the article are all worth a day of hiking and in good conditions many of them are outstanding. The header photo is from Panorama Ridge overlooking Gaibaldi Lake. This is a long hike for a day, but one of the best. Some notes on the others are also provided here:
- The Lions – the hike up is just in the forest, bu the final ascent on the rock is a bit exposed so it should only be done in dry conditions. The West Lion is a scramble on ledges but the East Lion is more of a climb.
- Elfin Lakes – this is always scenic but is a very busy trail. Pick a weekday morning to go.
- Stawamus Chief – a good hike but another busy place. Wonderful views await.
- Cape Scott – get ready for mud and rain. A long ways to go if the weather isn’t good.
- Okanagan High Rim – some nice sections but many are in the forest, some are on double tracks, and some are hard to find. Expect some mountain bikers, quads, and motorcycles too.
- Sun Peaks – all of these trails are great in the summer and taking the chair to mid-station is recommended,
- Knox Mountain – good trails but best done when it is not too hot since there isn’t much shade in the hills
- Iceline trail – one of the very best; we have done it as day hike but it is also a wonderful backpack
- Chain Meadows Trail – I am surprised to see this on the list even though it is a good trail, but I would not put it on a list of the top 25
- Cheam Peak – it is has been on our list for a long time; 2017 will be the year
A number of these hikes are in remote areas, or are very long, or in areas of marginal weather. From this list, we agree and also recommend Garibaldi Lake, Diamond Head, Sun Peaks, and the Iceline Trail are outstanding but we would also add Cathedral Lakes, Lake O’Hara, the Yoho Valley, all of the hikes in Rogers Pass, Mt. Revelstoke, Kokanee Glacier, the Valhallas, a number of hikes in Eagle Pass, some hikes in the Marble Range, Trophy Mountains, the Wavy Range, and many others, some of which are featured on this site.
