Arctic Crossing
Arctic Crossing is a travel/adventure book written by Jonathan Waterman. It is an account of a 2200 mile journey by kayak through the Northwest Passage, following the shoreline from Alaska to Nunavut. Along the way he camps and stays in Inuit camps and towns. He tries to understand the Inuit culture and to appreciate the transitions they are facing. He is fearless about sharing his own fears and doubts on this perilous journey. Weather and winds in the cold ocean are a constant threat. He is a keen observer of the natural world, but also of the people who live in that harsh environment. His writing is infused with his passion for wilderness, but also his compassion for the people who live and cope with life on the edge.
This is a recommended book….
We have also read Running Dry: A Journey From Source to Sea Down the Colorado River. He kayaked down the Colorado and shared his experiences, but also provides a lot of information on the history, geography, and social economics of the lands along the river.
We hope to read more books by Jonathan Waterman. Surviving Denali is next on the list.
