Murtle River Trail
The Murtle River Trail follows the south bank of the Murtle River upstream to the Majerus Farm and beyond to Pyramid Bay. It is also part of a bigger loop that includes the cross-country ski loppet trail from Helmcken Falls Lodge, over McLeod Hill, down to the river, past Majerus Farm and then south to Blackwater Creek. For winter visitors, there is a parking area on the right before the Dawson Falls Viewpoint.
The trail is tracked for cross-country skiing in winter, but it is also wide enough for snowshoers to stomp on the other side of the track. The route follows the Murtle River upstream for 4.5 km to Pyramid Bay, then the route starts to climb the slopes of McLeod Hill.
Most of the trail is flat, but there are a couple of rises farther on.
The Majerus Farm (1912 – 1946) is now overgrown with trees and the only remaining signs are two dilapidated buildings. Roland Neave tells the story of the farm in his book Exploring Wells Gray Park.
Near Pyramid Bay are some sunny spots for lunch and some open views.
Shoreline boulders become hummocks in the winter snow.
The cinder cone of Pyramid Mountain stands 250m above the river to the north. It erupted under the ice 12 000 years ago. It is covered in trees now and we can hike to the top, but its not a very interesting option, but it does make a picturesque sight from the river.
If we had chosen to xc ski, we would have gone another 2.3 km to King Hut, but on snowshoes we turned back to complete an 8.6 km out-and-back route along the Murtle River.
