Mara North
Every year we hike Mt. Mara from the northeast. We will continue to do this wonderful hike as long as we can. We start at the end of the Pruden Pass Road and we climb the northeast slopes to the top, avoiding private lands in the pass. There are bits and pieces of a trail on the way up, but there is a good trail on top. We flagged some of it on this last hike. It takes about an hour of hiking the steep slopes to get to the top.
From the viewpoint on the south bluffs, we have fine views southwest to Kamloops Lake.
On this last greyish day, rain showers passed through as we looked east to Kamloops.
To the northeast, we had clear views across the hills to Tod Mountain.
A dead pine tree on the rim has been photographed many times.
On the way up there were a few wildflowers in bloom. Daisies, shooting stars, saskatoon, and desert parsley greeted us. The orange hills surrounding Mara Canyon contrasted with the lava slopes of the cliffs and the river below.
We returned the same way we went up. The other routes to the top (through the canyon and around the west side) are harder and longer so we prefer the northeast approach. It would be a positive step to establish a trailhead south of the Pruden Pass Road with a man-gate or stile to avoid the quarter sections of grazing lease and private property on the north side of Mount Mara. We would be happy to support any such proposal.
