Hull Hill West Snowshoe
The double tracks on the northwest side of Hull Hill provide interesting snowshoe routes in winter. The tracks become snowed in and motorized traffic ceases (except for an occasional snowmobile). We usually drive for 400m down the Goose Lake Road to the side road. If the road is unplowed, snowshoers can park at the top and walk down. For 4WD vehicles, there is usually room for 1 – 3 vehicles to park just past the fence on the Hull Hill access road. We followed the double track southeast for 700m and then we turned right at the fork to cross Anderson Creek and bear southwest.
The snowshoeing in the area has a moderate slope, but it is much easier to follow and established track. After 1.4 km a side trail goes to the Jack Booth cabin, still standing for now.
The sun was shining through a cloud cover as a warm, wet front approached from the southwest.
The route gradually climbs through cutblocks and the views to the north and west improve as we continued along the track.
The cutblocks were logged and replanted, but a few tall aspens stand above the juvenile trees.
By the end of the day the blue skies were replaced by grey snow-bearing clouds so we were happy to have a half day of cold and partly clear skies in the high country.
Viewpoints start at the 3 km mark at 1247m (4060 ft.). The double track road ends at 3.5 km, a good spot for lunch and a quicker “trudge in the trench,” following our own tracks back through the snowdrifts surrounded by high-country forests.
On the way back we went off-track to cross Anderson Creek and then we looped back on other cutblock access roads to the start (see Anderson Creek Loop).
