Hanging Valley
Hanging Valley sits out of sight, but it is a worthwhile hike or bike in all 4 seasons. Park near Lac du Bois and follow the road around the north side. Continue to follow the road as it enters a back valley. This area was homesteaded in the early part of the 20th century and there are still bits and pieces of old cabins, fences, an old sawmill, but for the most part it sees cattle in the summer and visitors once in a while. It is possible to 4Wd down the valley to the drop-off and 2WD sometimes make the trip. After about 2km, a road veers up the hill to the right. That road is a rough route up to Opax Mountain, which is a good hike for another day. About half way down, another route veers left. That route backtracks up to Wheeler Mountain, but is not particularly interesting. There are better routes to the top of Wheeler. At the end of the valley, there is a drop off, but a narrow track descends into a gully below where there is a seasonal waterfall and on a hot day, the area is shaded. It is possible to explore beyond this for views into the Tranquille Creek Valley. This is a good shoulder season hike, especially since the gradient is mild back up.
