Gray Peninsula Trail
Montague Harbour Provincial Park is on the western shores of Galiano Island. The park has a campground, a boat harbour, several beaches, and hiking trails. We camped there and hiked the Gray Peninsular Trails We started at the boar launch at Shell Beach and followed the trails along the beaches and through the forest. The route was 2.4 km.
Shell Beach faces northwest to Trincomali Channel and has a pleasant swimming beach at high tide.
The west coastline of Galiano Island is all cliffs, except at Montague Harbour.
Shell Beach continues out to the point of Gray Peninsula.
Arbutus trees lean out over the water along the shoreline.
This driftwood sculpture was spotted by the side of the trail:
Many of the users of Montague harbour arrive by boat.
Parker Island protects the harbour from winds. Boats can approach the harbour from the north or south. Galiano Mountain overlooks Active Passage and the entrance from the south.
There is another gravel-shell beach on the south side of Gray Peninsula.
In June on a weekday there were dozens of boats moored in the harbour.
We were able to cross a channel at the entrance to the saltwater lagoon and continue through the campground.
This is a very nice short and scenic hike, well worth a visit to Montague Harbour on Galiano island.
