George Hill
On the north end of North Pender Island is the George Hill Trail. All of the trails on Pender Island are well-signed with designated parking, but there are a lot of turns to get to the right spot. Here is a good guide to the trailhead – Pender Parks and Trails. We climbed the trail to the hilltop and continued along the ridge and back.
The initial part of the trail is a steep climb through cedar-hemlock forest, but the trail emerges onto an open ridge with wide views.
From the first viewpoint we can see north to Navy Channel and Mayne Island.
To the southwest is the Port Washington Harbour leading out to Swanson Channel.
We were pleased to find a meadow of fawn lilies in bloom on the north slope of George Hill.
We continued along the top of the ridge among mixed tree varieties.
From the east end of the ridge were some cliffs with views to Davidson Bay, Navy Channel, and Mayne Island.
The out-and-back hike was about 3 km, a shorter trail for a half-day outing. We returned to the South Island and hiked Brooks Point Regional Park in the afternoon. The hikes on the Pender Islands were rewarding ones, especially in dry conditions.
