Falls Lake Trail
The Falls Lake Trail is short excursion to a beautiful spot in the Coquihalla Summit. When driving south pass the old toll booth area and watch for the Falls Lake Road turn on the right. Go up the paved road to the end and park. The singed trailhead is just ahead (north and to the right).
Thar Peak stands above the trail on the west side rising up to a open crest. It is the easternmost of several peaks that make up Zopkios Ridge – Thar, Nak, Yak, and Zopkios. There is a steep, faint trail that climbs up the prominent SE ridge. Our trail to Falls Lake was a moderate route (climb of 45m) through the forest for less than 1 km to the shores of the lake.
There are two campsite pads by the lake. At the shoreline logs have jammed the outlet to Falls Creek but there is a fine place to sit by the lakeshore to admire the view. Skiers and snowshoers cross the lake in winter and ski down slopes off the sides of Thar and Zoa.
We did this hike (2 km) then drove around the other side of Zoa on the Upper Codwater Road to hike into Little Douglas Lake (3 km) for 2 hikes back-to-back hikes in the Coquihalla Summit area, a good day in the Cascade Mountains, away from the hot and smoky Interior Plateau.
We will also return to the Coquihalla to hike Zoa Peak (again) and to summit Thar Mountain.
