We can snowshoe, going to higher elevations to stomp our own routes on tracks and trails. We can also do winter walks on backroads. We look for gravel roads that get little winter traffic. We walk in boots with … Continue reading…
In a week of hiking in Waterton National Park, we hiked up Rowe Creek Valley, then up the steep slopes below Mount Lineham to the ridge. The access road is up the Akamina Parkway to the trailhead. The lower trail winds up the valley in the forest, with some open areas and views to the peaks above. The upper valley … Continue reading…
Gulf Islands National Park Reserve has lands on most of the southern Gulf Islands, including Mayne Island. We hiked and paddled Campbell Point, Georgeson Island, and the Belle Isle Chain. We also visited Georgina Point Heritage Park on the northern tip of the Island. The old lighthouse and station on the point were built in 1885. The lighthouse is no … Continue reading…
We hiked for a week in Waterton National Park and enjoyed a wide range of routes. One of the easier trails we hiked was the Red Rock Canyon Trail, starting at the end of the Red Rock Parkway. The loop trail is only about 1 km, but there is lots to see. Although this hike is not a destination hike, … Continue reading…
Just before the Covid-19 epidemic we hiked the canyons of the Santa Catalina Range near Tuscon. Pima Canyon was one of our favorite hikes. All of the canyon hikes can be linked up for a long and difficult loop route, but most hikers go up to a viewpoint and back before the desert heat of the afternoon. We got an … Continue reading…

Forest covers the slopes on 3 sides and a trails criss-cross the area on the north, northwest, and northeast sides. Grazing lands are on the south side of the hill. Access involves climbing the hill from the north side. Any exploration of the grassland areas should not be done … Continue reading…
Before the snows get too deep, backroads make good hiking corridors. Once the snow is over 20 cm, snowshoes may be a better option. At about 10 cm hiking was easy with or without traction devices. On a sunny, mild day the hiking route was up the Mud Lake Road from McQueen Lake. There was one set of footprints into … Continue reading…
From Lac du Bois we hiked south along the Upper Grasslands Track past rolling hills and ponds to the (unsigned) Wheeler Mountain Road, along the double track for about 2 km, then onto a side track bearing north to the fenceline, down the fenceline corridor to Hanging Valley, then back up the double track to Lac du Bois, an 8.8 … Continue reading…
While visiting Mayne Island for paddling, hiking, and exploration, we hiked the trails in Mount Parke Regional Park. We accessed the trailhead off Montrose Road. The trails are well developed, winding through the western red cedars, red alders, giant sword ferns, and oregon grape. We followed the Halliday Ridge Trail as it wound its way east to connect to other … Continue reading…
Clapperton Hill is the forested ridge-hill that rises above the grasslands in the Lac du Bois Nature Conservancy. In past years I have hiked and snowshoed around the hill, I had climbed to the top area from the southwest, and I have visited a favorite viewpoint on the south shoulder a number of times. On this November day, the plan … Continue reading…
Snow had fallen in the Lac le Jeune area so our hiking was all on about 8 cm of wet snow. We hiked 11 km on trails and routes on the east side of the lake. From the Ross Moore Forest Service Road, we hiked first on the Sidewinder Trail then the Gus Johnson Trail. We hiked out to the … Continue reading…
On a sunny November day I hiked the trail above White Lake to the Lookout. There was some slash burning on Bastion Mountain so there was some smoke in the area. Although the trail is quite a good one, finding the right trail is a challenge. At the bottom is a maze of bike trails. I wound my way … Continue reading…
St. John Point Regional Park is a newly-established park, developed through the efforts of the Mayne Island Conservancy Society and the Capital Regional District. The trails are still under development, but fine for experienced hikers. We hiked a loop route and explored the shoreline and headlands wherever we found reasonable access. contFrom the trailhead/parking area at the end of the … Continue reading…
We camped at the end of the Clearwater Valley Road by Clearwater Lake and paddled the lake and hiked some trails, then, on the way back we hiked the North Dawson Falls Trail. A sign marks the trailhead not far from the Pyramid Trailhead. A loop route can be hiked, but on this occasion, we hiked in and back out … Continue reading…
