On an early May morning we went to Lac du Bois and hiked around the lake in a 6 km loop.    There is a good double track around the north side of the lake.   Ducks, turtles, and muskrats can be spotted at the edge of the riparian zone. 

At the west end of the lake, the double track continues to Hanging Valley, but we crossed a small stream outlet then into the forest.  

We followed an old single track through the forest, winding up to the top of the ridge.   There were fine views from the edge of the hilltop.    The lava cliffs on Opax Mountain rose to the north.  Lac du Bois lay below the ridge on the east side of the ridge.  

We continued along the ridge for about a kilometer.   We crossed an old fenceline, then followed the Wheeler Mountain Road down to the grasslands.   There is an old double track that connects Lac du Bois to the lower grasslands.    This is a hiking route I have been calling The Upper Grasslands Track.   We hiked along it working our way past ponds to Lac du Bois.  

After two hours we returned to our starting point.    Near the end we spotted western painted turtles, ducks, and killdeer.
