Opax Mountain is the large mountain area north of Wheeler and Mara Mountain at the north end of the Lac du Bois area.
Driving Directions/Trailheads:
- Start at Lac du Bois or in the Mud Lake area.
- There are no signs and most routes require good navigation skills. A good map or a GPs is recommended.
- The area on top of Opax Mountain has many old routes which are subject to windfall, dead-ends, fences, and forested areas that are easy to get lost in. People have become lost on Opax.
Trails:
- One of the best hikes is the West Opax route. From Lac du Bois, follow the Hanging Valley route. At the edge of the forest, an old double track angles northwest. It is easy the track to see in spring, but gets grown over in summer and fall. The track climbs the slopes of Opax for 4 km before arriving on top. Another old track bears west. We leave the track and go off-trail into an open area and then down to the top of west facing cliffs overlooking Tranquille Canyon. Return by the same route. Navigation required. 15 km.
- West Opax
- From the Mud Lake area a double track climbs to the top. We have used this as a way to get up to the top of the south-facing open lava cliffs. there are no trails from the double track so good navigation is required.
- East Opax
- We enjoy the Opax Traverse, going up one way, traversing the open slopes at the rim, then returning by the other double track. good navigation required.
