Greenstone Mountain Routes

There are many trails on Greenstone Mountain, but almost all of them were made for motorcycles and ATVs.   We have hiked many routes and some are shared here.

Driving Directions/Trailheads:

  • Drive on the TransCanada Highway West and turn left onto the Greenstone Mountain Road.
  • At 2.3 km the road splits in two.   The Greenstone Mountain Road bears east (left) and the Duffy Lake Road bears west (right).   All trailheads start off one of these two roads.
  • The area to the west is an OHV area and there is signage.    The trails are mostly in the forest and are busy in summer, but make okay hiking routes off-season.
  • The Greenstone Mountain Road goes east past Ned Roberts Lake the n starts the long climb to the top of the mountain.
  • Side tracks to the east connect to the Outer Inks Trails.   There is a maze of routes, but with a good map, hikers can hike pleasant forest routes.
  • There are tracks across the Greenstone burn area on the right side too, some of which have views from the tops of rocky hills.
  • The road continues to a high shoulder of Greenstone Mountain.   At about 13 km a road bears south to the area between Chuwhels Mountain and Greenstone Mountain.   Access to Chuwhels Lake, the Chuwhels Mountain OHV trails, and Face Lake is possible with 4WD.
  • The Greenstone Mountain Road continues to the top of the mountain, but side tracks near the top also link to the Dominic Lake area.
  • A pleasant short hike goes along the top of the mountain to the Forestry Lookout.   A loop can be hiked in Greenstone Mountain Provincial Park.

 

Trails:

  • Is it worth the drive to hike a route on Greenstone Mountain?  That depends…
  • We enjoy going to the top of the mountain on a nice day.
  • We have hiked quite a few routes, especially ones that go into lakes in the Duffy Lakes area, Chuwhels Lake – Face Lake, and on the Dominic Lake Plateau.
  • The OHV trails are quiet forested routes in shoulder season (Oct. – Nov. and end of March – April)
  • Any hike in the area requires some route-finding and is best done with a map or GPS.
