On Surrey Lake
Surrey Lake lies at 1397m just off the Surrey Lake Forest Service Road, about 9 km up from the Logan Lake Road. The best access is to take the road which leads to the fishing resort, but turn right onto a side road that goes around the west shore. Park and do a hand launch at one of several spots along the shoreline. A paddle around the lake is about 5 km.
There are no homes or cabins around most of the lake. Some of the western shoreline is marshy. We have gone on to Surrey Lake using the same road, but it is rough access to a remote spot.
There was a wind blowing from the south. Burr-reed floats on the surface like a weather vane.
On a weekday this was a very quiet area. There were no boats on the lake, nor any shoreline activity at the fishing lodge or at a handful of cabins on the north side of the lake.
Some of the burr-reed flowers/capsules were showing above the water.
A few water lilies were still in bloom, not yet eaten by moose in the high country hills.
A loon was fishing in the lake, this one with fishing line stuck in its bill.
Nearby Frogmoore Lakes and Sussex Lakes are also good paddling spots. They will be on next year’s paddling destinations.
