Three Types of Snowshoeing
We have 3 types of snowshoeing in our area
Trail Snowshoeing
– follows established trails
– may be signed and may have a trail fee (Sun Peaks, Stake Lake, etc.)
– few hazards and suitable for all levels of snowshoers
Off-Trail Snowshoeing
– routes on trails and off trails
– may have some traverses of denser forest with some under-the-snow hazards
– may be steeper sections, windfall/deadfall, creek valleys, side slopes, etc.
– may require a higher quality snowshoe
– best suited for intermediate/experienced snowshoers
Alpine Snowshoeing
– often combines trail snowshoeing and off-trail snowshoeing
– deeper snow areas are more demanding
– steeper pitches up and down
– longer days requiring endurance
– avalanche awareness and backcountry experience is needed
– usually requires higher level snowshoe and backcountry gear
– best led by an experienced backcountry leader
