Pavilion Lake Pictographs
It is a shared responsibility to not provide detailed descriptions online for the locations of archaeological sites. The chance of damage, vandalism, and other problems is too great so we collectively have agreed to not share the exact location. Nonetheless, it is known that there is a rock art panel not far from the Highway as it passes Pavilion Lake.
There is a plaque installed there noting the archaeological site:
The art seems to be done in ochre on limestone. Some of the figures are common to First Nations icons of the area.
Experts can possibly interpret the images, but there is little information on this site available.
First Nations people have occupied these areas for thousands of years. Pictographs may last for thousands of years, so quite often newer images are drawn over older ones, carrying on the cultural traditions over millenia.
We made this stop after hiking down near the Fraser River. I had been here before so I knew the approximate location and after a brief search we viewed the rock art before returning for the drive home.
