Jag Hill on the Snow
Jag Hill is an outlier ridge of the Red Plateau Escarpment. There is not trail from the backroad network, but the route just follows the height of land along the ridge to the final open hill. It has wonderful views and makes a fine destination for a hike. On a February day we chose to snowshoe up to the ridge from the Tranquille – Criss Creek Road near the Pimple. The general plan was to follow the Dewdrop Traverse route to the right elevation, then bear south to the viewpoint. A number of factors changed our route for that day.
The weather was cloudy and cool for the start as we climbed through the open forest on the east side of Red Plateau. The Dewdrop Traverse track is easy to follow in dry conditions, but crusty snow made the open areas difficult so we opted to break our own trail through the forest instead.
The route up the east side has a number of steep slopes. The snow was better in the trees so we chose our own winding path.
It snowed heavily for much of the route and visibility was poor so we had lunch on the Jag Hill Ridge then returned straight down the hill, completing a 6 km stomp. With better weather and softer snow conditions this would be a fine route.
