Ironmask North Loop
Hiking on the north side of the Ironmask Trails from late spring through mid-fall can be done, but it is now a mountain biking area and the single tracks are steep. Bikes coming down may be a challenge for hikers. Avoid going the wrong way on these trails; the double tracks are better choices for hikers. Hiking in shoulder season is a different matter. We can hike all of the trails and it would be unlikely to encounter anyone else, but caution is still needed. On a cool November day I hiked from the old trailhead (I first hiked up that track in 1977) onto the trail now called Triple Lumen. I then turned off onto side trails that traverse the steep hillside. The trails go through open douglas fir forest and across some grassland slopes around some open rocky hills. There are viewpoints to the northwest from the tops of some small hills on the north side of the higher Ironmask Hills. I hiked a quiet loop through the hills, seeing no one else, but taking the time to find wind-shaped trees, old snags, mosses and lichens, and glimpses of deer, birds, and squirrels. After traversing the hills, I chose a steeper trail back down to the trailhead
There are many trail combinations and I noted another one for the next hike through the northwest end of the Ironmask Hills.
Note – The Pineview – Ironmask Trails are officially closed from Nov. 30th on for the winter season. Check with the Kamloops Performance Cycling Center for updates.
