Hiking the Roche Lakes
In the fall over a few years we have hiked a loop route in Roche Lake Provincial Park. It mostly follows rough backroads and tracks past lakes and marshes, with fall colors along the route. It is rare to see anyone in the backcountry areas. We hiked 12.4 km on this day and saw no one else.
The first leg of the hike follows a rough “road” to Black Lake, a scenic spot by a fishing lake.
After Black Lake we hiked beside and around Bog Lake.
The route is easy to follow to Bog Lake, then side roads give hikers some choices to make. By staying right we can hike past an old trapper’s cabin to Ernest Lake.
We hike to the campsite on Ernest Lake, then hike back past the old building and then turn onto a not-easy-to-spot track which bears southwest around the marshes, then Ernest Lake. Continuing on this track (avoiding two side tracks) we go some marshes before arriving at the power line. John Frank Lake is not far away, but on this day we continued along the rough track to Roche Lake Campground.
Because the lake suffered winterkill, there were no fishermen on the lake as we hiked north back to the start.
Roche Lake was the final lake on the loop route, completing a 12.4 km hike. A few more images are shared here. click an image for a lightbox view and a caption.
This is a hike we try to do every year. Anyone who chooses to do the hike will need to do some navigation. the tracks are not shown on popular mapping and trail apps. Some additional links are provided here:
