Wheeler Mountain Hike
At the end of September on a sunny day, we hiked Wheeler Mountain from Lac du Bois. We followed the double track south (Upper Grasslands Track) past the large pond at the edge of the douglas fir forest.
There was some fall color in aspen groves.
The route follows the Wheeler Mountain Road, an old double track that winds around the north side of the mountain. A side track winds up to the open summit area on the west side.
Views extended southwest to Kamloops Lake, west to the Dewdrop Range, and northwest up the Tranquille River Valley.
There are a number of lava cliffs on the south and west side of Wheeler Mountain, which can be explored.
The whole out-and-back hike was about 15 km, which took us 5 hours. Much of the hike is through the quiet douglas fir forest. Wheeler Mountain is a remote, hard-to-get-to spot, but the hike is worth the time, especially in late spring or early fall.
