Hiking the Frederick Bluffs
Frederick Bluffs are series of rocky hills in the Dewdrop Range, a benchland overlooking Kamloops Lake. There are no trails through the Bluffs, but we can hike various routes through the grasslands hills to create a loop route of about 6 – 7 km. All routes will involve lots of up and down and there may be loose material underfoot on some of the slopes. There are numerous viewpoints to enjoy, like this one looking east to Battle Bluff.
On this day we hiked down a gully to an alkali pond, then up to the top of Bighorn Bluff. Our westward route was up and down a series of rocky hills to the western end of the bluffs.
This was a cooler spring and there were less wildflowers and birds to see. In past hikes we have spotted various birds, including hawks, deer, coyotes, bighorn sheep, snakes, and various grasslands fauna. On this day we saw sandhill cranes overhead, turkey vultures, and killdeer. A few early wildflowers were spotted.
We stopped for lunch at the top of the bluff above Frederick before working our way back across the hills to the place we parked, along the Frederick Road.
Some moments of our hike are captured in this YouTube video:
