Red Canyon Ramble

In a mild month of February, we hiked into Red Canyon, the longest canyon that winds up into the Red Plateau Escarpment above the Dewdrop Range. There was no snow at the parking area (the Dewdrop Trail), nor on the trail to the mouth of the canyon. We hiked past the stile fence crossing for the Dewdrop Trail, then continued northeast following an old track to the canyon.

Red Canyon narrows down over a 2 km. The mouth area is wider and forested. Along the way are a number of obstacles to go around – fallen trees, boulders, and brush.

Near the upper end of the canyon, just before the frozen falls, we had views down to the Dewdrop Range and the Thompson River Valley.

The area right below the falls requires some scrambling. We were surprised that the frozen falls had mostly diminished in February. All photos by the author. Two images from 2022 are included since the falls were more robust, in comparison. Click an image for a lightbox view and a caption.
