On the Icy Batch Trails
We hiked the valley bottom trails, mostly flat routes by the rivers and the south-facing slopes above looked dry, so I headed up the Lac du Bois Road to hike the lowest trails. At the first trailhead on the left, the lot was snowy/icy and the trails across the hillside were all ice with some dirt sections. Microspikes on my hiking boots made the hiking reasonable.
Some of the trails bearing north cut across the pipeline but there are routes on the south side that had some ice-free sections.
Beside the trails, the sagebrush and grasslands were free of ice.
Although we can hike these trails without traction devices, it would require hiking off the side of the trails and being careful.
Hiking along the river was much better, and snowshoeing in the high country has also been very good, so we may wish to wait a while yet to hike on the lower hills. A short video captures some of the hike in the icy lower Batchelor Hills.
