Goose Lake Road on the Snow
When winter roads become difficult to drive and trails are covered in snow, an alternative outing is to hike/walk plowed backroads. One of the best is the Goose Lake Road. From a parking area at the east end of the road to the Peterson Creek crossing and back is about 6.7 km.
I sometimes run the road, using a good winter running shoe (Solomon Snow Spike). Other days I walk or hike, wearing hiking boots with microspikes for traction. It is easy to develop small tears from constant slips so the spikes enable good traction and a steady hiking pace.
Along the Goose Lake Road Peterson Creek runs through a series of marshes. there are only 4-5 homes/ranches along the road and very little traffic. This is a scenic route in winter.
After the crossing of Peterson Creek, the road climbs up to Goose Lake. This middle third of the road is also a good route as long as road conditions allow good access.
The upper third is also a good choice but is probably more snowy. It is best accessed from the Lac le Jeune Road. For all 3 sections we go out-and-back for a 2-hour workout. Watch for us on the Goose Lake Road.
