On the McQueen Lake Trails
We hiked on a loop route on the McQueen Lake Trails in late August. We avoid accessing any of the trails when students are on the site (a request from the McQueen Lake Environmental Education Center). We got an early start and hiked trails which steered away from the Overnight Center. We hiked along the Red Trail along McQueen Lake, then went east to the Orange Trail along an arm of Griffin Lake.
The single track trail follows the shoreline of the lake to the north end, then we continued down the east side of Griffin Lake.
We stopped for a break at the old J. Brown homestead on the northeast corner of the lake.
We then followed the Grasslands Community Trail to the meadows near Clay Lake, passing Shirley’s Dip and Smiling Ponds.
Our route followed a double track back to the start, finishing a 6.2 km morning hike. The McQueen Lake Trails are a pleasant, moderate choice as long as we pick times when no students are on the site. Click an image for a lightbox view and caption.
