The Deep Lake Loop
The Deep Lake Trail starts at the trailhead on Ida Lane in Westsyde. We can hike up the road or onto a loop trail into Lac du Bois Grasslands Protected Area. Signage helps to direct hikers to the loop trail, to Deep Lake, or to the Grasslands Community Trail. On a June day we hiked toward Deep Lake, then took the loop trail now called Around the Mountain.
A single track trail winds through the forest on the east side of the hills, then loops back toward the Deep Lake area grasslands.
The loop route comes back past a pond in the same dale as the lake, then continues on to Deep Lake itself.
Deep Lake is a quiet smaller lake nestled between the hills. We talked to a fisherman who confirmed that there are fish in the lake. He was back for some catch-and-release angling.
The loop route comes back on a different trail on the west side of the hills, with views down to Westsyde and the North Thompson River.
The Deep Lake Loop route is about 6 – 7 km of hiking with options along the way.
The drone provided some short aerial video footage of Deep Lake.
Deep Lake is a nice hike for a spring day. When the grasses and weeds grow taller in summer it can be both a hotter hike, but also less appealing with the tall growth along the trail, and grass and weed seeds that will stick in your socks or boots. Spring or late fall are the best options for Deep Lake.
