Tranquille Ridge in March
In late winter the south-facing slopes dry off first so we head up into the hills, enjoying dry conditions when the route is ready. We hike up Tranquille Ridge from the bottom to the top of the hill sometimes called The Pimple, though we prefer just to refer to it as the Tranquille Ridge Summit. The route follows some double tracks, some single tracks, and some open slopes with no tracks to the base of the final hilltop. Some gullies have to be crossed and some route-finding is required. From the final open slope it is a light scramble up the west side to the rocky hilltop. The route is a steep 3 km one way with 530m (1740 ft.) of elevation gain.
The weather was foggy at the start but cleared for the hike back down.
We veered off and wound through the forest on the way back down, traversing slopes and crossing gullies to an old double track which descended down to the start. The hike is a bit of a demanding one. It is best suited to spring or fall and it provides a good fitness challenge at any time.
This is a hike we do most years in March when the higher slopes are snowy, muddy, or icy. We plan to do it again next year.
