Snowshoeing the Direwolf Loop
On a foggy winter day we drove to the parking area for the Isobel Lake Trails and we snowshoed an 8.7 km loop route on established trails, with tracks set by fat tire bikes. It was foggy at the Eagle’s Eyrie parking area and around the lake, but we climbed up the Direwolf Trail to 1256m elevation (4120 feet) where we were mostly above the clouds but still in a misty zone. Hoar frost covered the trees and the snow underfoot was crisp as we stomped along the trails.
We improvised at one point, taking a short-cut that paralleled the Cartel Trail, but we enjoyed the off-trail exploration down the open slopes to the Beers a’ Waitin’ Trail. We finished out loop by winding around the lake back to the parking area.
Our thanks to the Fat Tire biking community for maintaining access to the trails and for redeveloping the trails for winter use. I took some video footage and some photos along the way, compiled into a short video:
A special note to hikers to stay off the designated fat bike trails. Postholing just makes the trails worse for everyone else. These trails are for fat tire biking or snowshoeing. There are many other places to do a winter hike.
