While visiting Mayne Island for paddling, hiking, and exploration, we hiked the trails in Mount Parke Regional Park.  We accessed the trailhead off Montrose Road.  

The trails are well developed, winding through the western red cedars, red alders, giant sword ferns, and oregon grape.  

We followed the Halliday Ridge Trail as it wound its way east to connect to other trails, then more steeply southwest to the top of the ridge.  

From the eastern end of the ridge the first views were south over Heck Hill to Navy Channel and the Pender Islands.   

As we hiked west along the ridge, the ridge became more open and views extended down to Plumper Sound with the San Juan Islands in the distance.  

At the end of the ridge, we skirted a tower and helicopter pad and enjoyed views down to Village Bay.   We spotted 3 ferries while on the ridge.  

From the ridge we hiked down the Old Gulch Trail down the slopes to connect up to the lower trails for a loop route.  

There are many route options, but hiking to the highest point on Mount Parke is the best choice on a clear day.   The Mount Parke Trails are some of the best hiking trails in the Gulf Islands and are highly recommended.
