Sunrise Mountain Ramble
The Sunrise Mountain Trail starts at the end of Ronde Lane in Barnhartvale. It is a very steep hike, so we only do this route every 2 -3 years. On a cool, drizzly May day we hiked up to the top, then looped on a route we knew down the back side onto old tracks.
On the way up, we stopped at various hilltops to enjoy the views.
The top of Sunrise Mountain is an open spot with wide views over Barnhartvale, but also to the hills beyond, even on a grey, cloudy day.
The loop route can be hard to find, but we had done it a few times so we just aimed to the west side of the gully, then followed a series of faint trails down, then back over onto the ridge of Sunrise Mountain.
The weather cleared a bit coming down, though it continued to drizzle all the way down. We had fine views of the South Thompson River Valley as the river flowed to the Confluence in Kamloops.
Our route was only 5 km, but because the whole trail is steep and a bit loose, it is a hard hike on any day. We will be back to hike Sunrise Mountain again, perhaps from the Pratt Road side next time, a longer but easier route.
